Combating Plagiarism

January 28th, 2009 Freak No comments

Spotted this in my journey through the blogosphere : Plagiarismadvice.org - a website provided by JISC to provide advice on plagiarism. It includes resources for avoiding plagiarism, discussion as to why pupils do plagiarise and how to avoid it. The website also provides guidance on developing information literacy skills in using electronic sources.

e-Clips

November 7th, 2008 Freak No comments

Eclips‘  is a video, audio and image resource bank for use by teachers. More specifically, it is aimed at teachers in Wales, and is provided by BBC Wales, but can be accessed by anyone. It is very easy to search – by keyword, by subject, by age group, by clip type. Resources are then streamed to your computer, so an internet connection is required (you cannot save the video/audio clips, though you can use the images with other applications). Lots of very valuable resources here – really worth a look.

Record and Embed Sound into Web Pages

November 6th, 2008 Freak No comments

Vocaroo is a great site, it allows you to record a snippet of audio and embed it into a web page. There’s no need to register – just record a voice recording, and select the ‘Post on the internet’ option. Vocaroo will provide you with an embedded code snippet to add to a web page – its as easy as that!

Google Lesson Activities

December 13th, 2007 Freak No comments

Google have started producing some lesson packages to be delivered using various Google Tools.

Google Lessons

So far there are lessons for History, Geography and Citizenship and they’re all UK focussed. I’ve had a quick look at them, and they appear quite good.

There are also 8 lesson ideas for the primary phase.

Another great example of Google supporting teaching and learning.

Creating SCORM content

July 26th, 2007 Freak No comments

If you’re using a learning platform, how do you create SCORM compliant content for it? Many have built in SCORM authoring features but what about those that don’t. Or perhaps you would like to author content offline. There are many commercial applications for authoring SCORM content, although many of these can be quite expensive.

I recently came across a great open source application for creating a range of SCORM content which could be used in all learning platforms that will accept SCORM. The application called ExeLearning allows teachers to author html documents for e-learning. Unlike many SCORM authoring packages, the software is very easy to use with a range of preconfigured e-learning templates including multiple choice quizzes and cloze activities.

The software will export content as a self contained web package which can be uploaded to learning management systems, as well as SCORM 1.2, IMS, and iPod notes.
I downloaded and installed the software, and within 5 minutes I had created my SCORM content, uploaded it to my learning platform and it worked!
An example of SCORM content authored with ExeLearning
I’ve subsequently tested the content I’ve created with several of the leading learning platforms, all of which it worked with.
ExeLearning can be downloaded for free from the following website:
And is available for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux.
